When the school year started, many of my third grade students were unaware of the city they lived in. Those who knew they lived in Chicago knew little more about the city. Most of my students have not had the opportunity to see more of Chicago than their North Lawndale community. This spring, we will be exploring Chicago in our classroom: its history, many cultures, and unique design. As the culminating activity in the unit, the students hope to experience Chicago by boat and take a Shoreline Skyline Sightseeing Tour. Students will get a chance to see the skyscrapers of Chicago (many for the first time) from the water, and see up close the architecture they have learned about in the classroom. Students will return to the classroom after the trip and describe what they saw in writing and illustrations. The bus for this trip costs $110 from Herzl School to Navy Pier. The ticket price is $6 each, for 35 students and 4 adult chaperones. My class (18 students), and a fellow third grade class (17) are completing the unit together and hope to have take the trip together as well. Our students are so excited about this wonderful opportunity to take what we have learned outside of our classroom. They will experience downtown Chicago in a way that most children in their neighborhood have not, and see the buildings that many Chicagoans walk past on a daily basis.
