Exploring Our Amazing World Through Reading!

My students need more leveled non-fiction leveled books for their "Just Right" reading bins.

My Students

Have you ever tried reading a book written in a language other than your own? Were you frustrated? That's how many children feel when they attempt to read a book that is too difficult for them. Far too often these children become frustrated and give up, and their desire to read begins to disappear.

The students in my classroom are as diverse in academic levels as they are in culture.

Our Title 1, inner-city school is "home" to almost 1200 students with a multitude of ethnicities. There are over 30 languages spoken in our school. These 30 first graders are eager to learn every day!

My Project

Many of my students are new to school, this country, and reading. Some, unfortunately, do not have, or have very limited, access to books at home. Through leveled, non-fiction books, my students would have the opportunity to read about things that interest them, and on levels that they feel comfortable reading. Some may choose to read these during independent reading time, or with a partner during buddy read. They would also be able to borrow these books to read for their daily Reading Log assignment and share their love for reading with their families!

Fostering the love and appreciation for reading and books is something I am dedicated to.

I want my students to view reading as a source of enjoyment and a guide to learning more, rather than an assignment to be completed. I want them to WANT to read more. Please help me build their love of learning with these "just right" books that will help every reader feel confident and successful!
