My Students

My 9th and 10th grade students understand why art is the universal language that unites them all. Our school is made up of 100% English Language Learners in the South Bronx. Through true creativity, they have been excelling in theater and visual art projects.

These are the students who enjoy moving around because curiosity cannot keep them in a chair for too long.

These are the kids who may still be transitioning from middle school in their home country and they are still learning the ropes of how to be a successful New York City student. These are the ones who have successfully created visually engaging paintings, drawings, and sculptures about ancient civilizations that they learned about in history class. These are the young scholars who have also written emotional monologues and excitedly read Shakespeare although English is their second language. Interestingly, these are the students who show a daily passion for music by creating one of a kind beats while banging pens on the table or with their own lips and suddenly bursting into rhymes and rap. These are my students and unfortunately, I am not a music teacher nor a dance teacher.

My Project

How I wish I could be their music teacher to harness all the talent I see in class, in the halls, and during early morning trips to my classroom for "Good Morning Miss" raps. By treating a handful of them to a STOMP performance in NYC, I hope to be able to instill a new found passion for exploring the arts outside of the Bronx. There is so much culture around their own communities, as well as the negatives. I've seen the spark in their eyes when I've taken a few of them to contemporary art galleries downtown and when I show them Youtube videos of street dancing and how bodies use shape and form the way we see it in visual art. They love it. Life on stage is a different story. They will be mesmerized and it might even push a few of them to start gathering a group of friends after school to practice and audition for our next talent show.

Confidence.

It will build confidence by hooking them in to something new and exciting. The opportunities are limited for our students, which is why I enjoy dedicating my Saturdays to taking them around the city to get to know what's out there. A STOMP performance would be the perfect culmination to an exciting school year.
