it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy events, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.
Through book club students develop leadership and citizenship. By organizing meetings, leading discussions, and creating fundraisers like this, students learn how to work well with others, communicate ideas even if they are not in agreement, and work towards a common goal. They also learn how to plan and manage time. Moreover, by reading fiction, students develop the ability to see the world from other points of view and develop empathy for others.
In Their Own Words
Our Literature Club is trying to receive funding for our next book to read in our book club portion of the club meetings. This year, we are focusing on different genres to compare themes and characters. We especially want to focus on analyzing and comparing protagonists’ choices, actions, and characteristics across genres. We have already read horror and non-fiction, and now it's time for science fiction! We have chosen a classic, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, for this genre. We hope that in reading this novel, we can deepen our critical thinking skills in comparing genres and expand our horizons beyond YA fiction novels.
With the help of my co-president, we will lead the club into discussions about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy during our weekly club meeting. Along with our club sponsor and librarian, we will engage the club members into conversation not only about this novel, but comparing it to the novels we have read throughout the year. As we are a group, everyone will participate and have a chance to share their own opinions and ideas. My co-president and I primarily organize the meetings and discussion topics, with the help of the librarian.
This project is important to me, because it allows various students from different grades and backgrounds to come together over a shared love of reading. Personally, book club allowed me to make new friends as a freshman in high school, and it's great to see other new members make friends. Reading provides an escape during stressful times of high school, and allows us to relax and escape to a new world. This club also allows members to gain confidence in sharing their ideas in a safe environment where no idea can be wrong. Our weekly meetings allow friends who may not see each other all the time to hang out and discuss a book. This book will be a great read to expose the club to science fiction, and we can't wait to read it!
