Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 12-13 year olds are bright and eager young people from mostly immigrant and/or lower income households. Due to their background, they don't always feel comfortable identifying as American despite the fact that the majority were born or raised here for most of their lives. Many of them struggle to find relevance in learning US History because they haven't seen their lives mirrored in traditional texts. I see it as my duty to help them make connections to find relevance by providing a diverse set of resources for them to choose from and explore.
My Project
By far my most students' favorite project is our food history project. In the first semester, I have students explore food history and the exchange of foods/culture through the Columbian Exchange.
Students will look through these books and readings about indigenous foods and European foods and see how these ideas and methods were exchanged through colonization and global trade.
In the second semester, students will research the idea of what it means to be American or what constitutes American culture. Students will use the books to identify various popular dishes that arrived with immigrant groups and through time became part of American cuisine/culture. This is a fantastic way for students to explore when, how, and why so many different people immigrated to the US and then compare the various experiences they faced in trying to make a living here.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
