Exploring Multiple Cultures Via Music

My classroom needs resources such as CDs and DVDs for learning about multicultural music.

Our music department serves nearly 1300 K-5 students in Queens, NY and includes several performance groups in addition to general music in all grades.

The school population reflects the fact that Queens County is the most ethnically diverse county in the USA. Teaching students about music from different countries not only helps to make them feel a connection to their family heritage, but increases tolerance of other cultures and ethnicities they may encounter.

Finding appropriate music from across the world can sometimes be a challenge, not to mention time-consuming. The acquisition of a set of CDs with music from several different countries as well as DVDs for learning multicultural dances will be a vital resource for multi-cultural music studies. Not only can this resource be used in music class, but can easily be tied to other subjects across the curriculum such as Social Studies, Physical Education and Art.

Please help our students embrace diversity with the tolerance that education can bring. This is one small step to a happier, more peaceful global community.
