The students I teach are remarkable they are African American and Mexican descent. They are immigrants and English is their second language. They have difficulty reading and writing. They come to school and most of them can't even afford a notebook and pencil. Most of them qualify for the after school tutoring program, but are so far below grade level. It is difficult for them to catch up. Their parents can't help because most of them speak no English themselves. The neighbor is poor and the school is their safe haven. It keeps them off the streets and out of trouble. It gives them a safe place to come stay warm and gain knowledge.
The materials will make a difference in my classroom because my students come from poor economic homes. They have never seen how life truly begins. With a butterfly garden and ladybug land they will get to see ladybugs and butterflies emerge from eggs and develop as they explore their life cycles. They will learn that some insects emerge from eggs and are not born the way we see them. They will learn that these insects have four stages that they go through in a life span before they die. They well understand the different life cycles that living things go through. I want to teach them all about life science. With the root viewer they will get to see how vegetables grow and understand that when they go to the supermarket it is not where a food process begins. In order for them to get the total experience of the lessons. I want to provide them with visuals and hands -on activities. The digital camera will give the students an opportunity to take pictures of the activities and share their experiences with their families. Since most of my students parents come from other countries. English is their second language. So this is a new beginning for them. As an educator I want to give them the total learning experience. Which involves learning, hands on and activity based learning.
