Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are immersed in Spanish for 80% of the day. They are working to become innovators of the future by appreciating other cultures, languages and the arts. My goal is to have my students express themselves through the performing arts and gain an appreciation of culture and language.

Our school has a Dual Immersion Program where our students' families have chosen for them to be bilingual, bicultural and biliterate.

Many of our students are from Anaheim and nearby cities. We know that by building an appreciation of the arts our students can do more than just be a bystander they will do as "Disneyland does and create" new and exciting innovations in all areas in the future. A large population of our students are from Hispanic/Latino decent. Many have varying levels of Spanish language development. For most, English is their dominant language.

My Project

My students need a portable speaker system with a microphone, cable and iPod. The materials I am requesting will help launch a Ballet Folklorico group at my school site. The audio system will help with outdoor rehearsals and performances. Students will learn traditional Mexican dances from the various States of Mexico. It is my hope that by providing students with an opportunity to self express through music and dance they will find a deeper appreciation of the Spanish language and will learn to collaborate with varying group members.

A Ballet Folklorico group will provide my students with the opportunity to engage with the Spanish Language in a non-academic setting.

This in turn will help them value languages other than the majority language of English. In the future an experience like this will allow them to be more receptive toward other cultures and languages. Learning to be open to differences in culture and language will help them become effective in collaboration, imagination, and self-expression.
