Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my journalism class are eager to be actively engaged in the world of interviewing, publishing, and investigative reporting. However, they need a creative way to be introduced to this field. We will examine themes in The Kite Runner while using it as a journalism text.

The student population at our school is 85% Hispanic, and nearly 100% coming from low income backgrounds.

Most have tested low on standardized exams, but choose our school due to their ambition to succeed. Instead of going to the large neighborhood schools which house over 3,000 students each, they come to our school with 800 students for a more individualized plan of action, where we can concentrate on each child's goals and aspirations. They have not been exposed to the culture that is abundant in Manhattan and work best when teachers introduce topics in new, creative ways. We have over a 90% attendance rate, and our students truly care about their education. They may start our school with poor skills, but we have a 83% graduation rate, one of the highest in the city with our population.

My Project

The students in my journalism class will examine the text The Kite Runner, and use that text to explore aspects of journalism. We will interview characters as we read, write news articles on the history of Afghanistan, and cultural clashes, and create editorials based on characterization. The culminating activity will be seeing a performance of the novel, which is done by the American Place Theater which stages readings from popular texts. The students will get a deeper understanding of the text from this performance, and use the performance to write a theater review and play the role of critic. We have also been assured the students can play the role of journalists and interview the actors as well as the production staff after the performance.

After discussing theater with my class, I came to the realization that none of my students have ever attended a Broadway or even an off-Broadway play.

More than half the students have never been to Manhattan. This experience goes beyond just seeing a production of The Kite Runner -- it introduces them to an artistic world. It introduces them to the world of theater where people pursue their passions.
