Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our high school is a small progressive school located in the heart of the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The student population is mainly composed of African American and Hispanic students with a few Caucasian and Asian students. At present, out of the 350 students enrolled I the school, there are 80 students who need special education services. My role in the school is a special education teacher working with students with learning disabilities in Humanities and Reading-Writing Workshop classes. Moreover, I teach Creative Experience – an arts and craft core class.
There are many creative and talented students in my school. That is why self-expression and exploration classes will be meaningful and relevant for them. However, as much as teaches have brilliant ideas for meaningful and relevant activities or classes for students, funding is a major obstacle that our inner city school is facing. Without proper funding, ideas are difficult to become a reality.
As a result, I am creating a Creative Experience core class with the theme of “Exploring Identity and Creativity through Scrapbooking” and seeking support from donorschoose.org. This particular Creative Experience Class which focuses on arts and craft — particularly scrapbooking, is a new class in the school. The students will have two hours a week of this arts and crafts class. Scrapbooking is one of my favorite hobbies, and I want to be able to share this passion with my students. Research and personal experience have proven the positive effects of scrapbooking. It is not merely a creative hobby, but more importantly it lends itself to self expression and self discovery. In addition, scrapbooking can also be a therapeutic activity for my inner city students. It will also provide opportunities for them to reflect on themselves and lives.
The resources needed to complete the project is basically funding to buy scrapbooking materials for the students. Scrapbooking does not require a huge investment at first. We just need supplies such as albums with sheet protectors, scissors, acid free plain and patterned papers, pens and the sort.
Indeed, in this day and age when young people are easily drawn to questionable interests, it is a good idea to immerse students in a hobby that is meaningful, relevant, fun and therapeutic.
