Not every student learns in the same way, and I do not want my classroom to be considered 'just standard.' Sitting still is out-of-date and not a way to engage learners. I want students to be more independent, critical thinkers.
My students are sixth graders at a large suburban middle school with approximately 1,000 students.
They come from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds, and in recent years, as many as 25% of my students have received free and reduced lunch. Multiple languages are also spoken including Korean and Spanish.
Sixth graders are social butterflies and love work in pairs and groups. They are active and ready to learn!
Imagine taking a class trip to the Great Plains of the U.S., Auschwitz Concentration Camp Museum, the Palace of Versailles, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the major cities of the U.S., and other ‘Wonders of the World.’ As a world traveler myself, there’s nothing like visiting the actual place. Google Expeditions is the next best thing to actually being there. These virtual devices bring historical places and world-wide travel destinations alive for U.S. History and World Cultures students and allow them to develop a better understanding of historical events.
A Google Expedition Kit will bring history and the world to life for students, and giving students access to new technology is an investment in their future.
Seeing places through a Google lens will allow students to better understand historical topics. These virtual field trips will also aid in student written expression as they will be able to better describe events and places they have seen and not just read about.
The Google Expedition Kit is an amazing opportunity to bring learning to life for middle school students, and the possibilities are endless. They will definitely allow students to develop a better understanding of U.S. History and the world around us.
Help my students travel beyond the classroom walls. It will make learning more exciting, fun, and meaningful, and they will remember the experience forever.
