My Project
AZACS is the first tuition-free, public charter school in Arizona focused on the educational needs of children with autism. We serve students across the spectrum-non verbal, low academic skills to highly verbal high academic students. This year we will be graduating our first High School class. Many of our parents never dreamed this would be possible. My students are bright and inquisitive students that have a thirst for learning! For some of my students, it can be hard to be engaged with social studies because they do not see how history affects them nor does it feel familiar to them. My students are very interested in gaming and technology.
I believe incorporating a VR headset will help the students to have a more hands-on engaging approach to learning and understanding our history and the world.
In the past two years, we have navigated COVID-19. We shut down like the rest of Arizona when it first hit. However, we were the first school to reopen that June with an appointment based school program and then have students return on campus full time by October 2020 in our brand new main campus. Some of my students do not have the resources or the opportunities to travel outside of Phoenix. I would love for my students to be able to go on field trips but that is still difficult to navigate while still in a pandemic.
