Exploring Geometry with Manipulatives

My Project

Our community has been hit hard with Covid. Twenty percent of our students have lost a parent or both parents because of the pandemic. Twenty percent of our students are now receiving free and reduced services. Our clientele has changed drastically in just three years and will continue to do so. Our students need more support from teachers and administration. My goal is to make learning fun and interesting, but I want students to learn and master geometry as well. I want more hands-on tools for my kids to increase their learning.

I have requested kinetic sand so that I can help students create shapes directly in their hands.

The sand will build amazing diagrams and is a wonderful mindfulness tool for kids. The plastic cubbies and plastic containers will be perfect for dividing the sand into team work and will also hold the plastic pattern blocks. The pattern blocks are manipulatives I have previously cut out of paper and could now give kids. Students would have a chance to tactilely measure and create composite shapes.

Poster paper and graph paper will be perfect for groups of kids to record their findings and display knowledge in order to receive teacher feedback. When computing answers, students do not arrive with calculators and we will soon be diving into Trigonometry. These calculations cannot be completed without scientific calculators.

I love to provide kids multiple opportunities to calculate and absorb information. I have a set of individual white boards for student use but the erasers need to be replaced. Students use colored pencils on a daily basis, and a pencil, and I have no working pencil sharpeners. Lastly, I have to keep my work organized and would use binders daily for this task. Thank you!!
