To fifth graders, the world outside of our town has little meaning, and maps are just papers with words that have to be memorized. My job as their teacher is to find interesting and fun ways to create meaning in the geography they need to learn. In the past, I have used software on my classroom computers that has excited the students enough to gather around the computers to discuss maps, but the number of computers in the classroom is quite limited. To supplement the computers and software already in the classroom, I would like to create geography stations that can be used for independent learning activities or with small groups. The Geo Safari electronic learning system allows the student to select a card with a particular focus, work on matching questions and answers, and then self-check their answers. The system also allows for future expansion into other curricular areas, including the sciences of space and ocean life. All of the students in my class will participate in this learning experience. Purchasing two of these systems and the geography lesson cards will allow me to set up two geography learning stations to supplement the computer learning stations already in the classroom. Our school is an economically diverse one, including students from local shelters and middle-class students who have a wide variety of life experiences. There are currently thirty-three students in my class at many different learning levels, and providing lessons for all the different strengths and experiences is critical.
