My high school math classroom is a place for students to make discoveries about themselves and the world around them.
My students are curious and capable learners who come from a very poor, rural area in the Mississippi Delta.
At our Title I school, 100% of students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Though my students may lack the opportunities that students receive in other parts of the country, they have dreams and goals as big as anyone else's and they deserve the chance to achieve them.
My students are coming to the close of their senior year and are eager to explore career choices in the STEM disciplines, especially those to do with computers. They are seeking opportunities to explore STEM careers in small-group, hands-on settings.
Raspberry Pi kits would allow students to get hands-on opportunities to program computers and electronics.
Students would use Raspberry Pi Starter kits and SD cards to get real-world programming experience with both Scratch and Python. Electronics kits would allow them to expand their engineering experience to include basic electronics engineering. Having enough materials would allow students the rare opportunity to work in groups small enough that they could all get real, hands-on experience with the electronics.
As seniors, closing out four years of math and science, this would be the perfect capstone project for students, allowing them to directly apply their knowledge of the logic of math and the physics of circuits and electronics. With Raspberry Pi kits, students would conduct a variety of exercises and experiments involving different aspects of computer science and electrical engineering. Finally, they would close the year by preparing a short lesson for elementary school students are our sister school on computer programming. This would be an excellent opportunity for students to share what they have learned and make a difference in their community to cap off their senior year.
