Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our classroom is a melting pot of eager third graders in Utah, each with their own story and a shared curiosity about the world. This project, "Exploring Diversity Through Stories: A Journey for Young Minds," aims to enrich their understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and perspectives through a carefully curated selection of books and materials. The resources, including graphic novels like "New Kid," "Class Act," and "School Trip," along with the Lee & Low Anti-Racism Collections and inspirational books such as "Be Bold! Be Brave! 11 Latinas Who Made U.S. History," are chosen to foster empathy, respect, and a love for reading.

We plan to integrate the graphic novels into our reading circles, allowing students to see themselves in the characters and understand others' experiences.

This approach will encourage discussions on personal challenges and societal issues in a relatable context. The Lee & Low Anti-Racism Collections will be the backbone of our social studies lessons, providing historical contexts and contemporary stories that highlight the importance of anti-racism and inclusivity. Through activities like book reports and group presentations, students will delve deeper into these themes, promoting critical thinking and empathy.

The More Than Peach multicultural crayons will be used in art projects to represent the diverse skin tones within our classroom and the wider community, emphasizing the beauty in our differences. Meanwhile, books like "The Undefeated" and "Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race" will inspire students with real-life stories of perseverance and achievement against the odds. By incorporating these materials into our curriculum, we aim to create a classroom environment that values diversity, encourages curiosity, and prepares our students to be compassionate global citizens.
