Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students go to a small charter school in urban San Diego County. I teach students from 9th-12th grade that have a range of disabilities from mild to more severe classification. In my college readiness courses, it provides my students with information and transition skills that will hopefully prepare my students for the real world after high school.

I want to make sure that by the time my students leave me after high school they are ready for college, a career, and functional life skills they can use in their everyday lives.

My Project

These novels and documentaries will provide my students with information about the lives of real and fictional people that are born with disabilities or having a disability occur later on in life that changes the character's life. I want my students to explore what it means to have a disability in today's society, and for them to see it from different perspective beyond their own challenges. I want my students to understand that yes they have a disability but they can still go to college, get a job, and have a meaningful and impactful life after high school.

This is to demonstrate to my students that people who have disabilities can lead meaningful lives; and to not let their disabilities hold them back.

The purpose of this donors choose project is so that we can purchase novel sets that present the perspective of children and students who have disabilities and what they did to either overcome or learn how to live with their disabilities.
