Exploring Creativity and Kindness Through Art and Literature
My students need quality art supplies that will allow them to explore making art that isn't compromised by poor quality materials. Our classroom also needs books that support our year-long, integrated themes of kindness and creativity.
Every morning, after we enter the classroom for the day, my students sit in a circle and welcome each other with a warm smile and a friendly handshake, song, or greeting. We talk about our day, the problems we will be solving, the new skills we will be learning, and the familiar skills we will be practicing. Our room is an explosion of creativity and ideas, and every day is a wonderful adventure of discovery.
First grade is an amazing year of growth.
My students started the year with a wide range of ability and engagement. Students who could not write their own names in August are now reading Frog and Toad. Others began the year knowing simple phonics patterns and now delight in reading the "ultimate" text--the chapter book! Our population is a wonderful mix of Spanish-speaking immigrants, students with special needs, on-target learners, and gifted children. They are the sons and daughters of teachers, bartenders, hairdressers, engineers, and roller-rink managers. Our room is a delightful mix of energy and focus.
My Project
Though we have a satisfactory classroom library of hand-me-down books, thrift store finds, and well-loved (and worn!) classics, our shelves are lacking current literature. My students work enthusiastically on book-making and art projects, and higher quality supplies will allow their efforts to be reflected in pieces that look like they imagine--rich, vibrant, and full of energy.
The important themes we incorporate are those of kindness, community, growth-mindset, and creative expression.
SO many wonderful books exist that I want to get into the hands of my students! From the inclusive message of Ricky, the Rock that Couldn't Roll to the "express yourself" pleasure of I'm NOT Just a Scribble... to the "making math fun" joys of 7 Ate 9, literature will add depth to our learning.
Quality art materials, like woodless colored pencils that last long, break infrequently, and color with intensity, will encourage my little artists to create even more art. The faded colors and washed out tones of our art supplies can occasionally fit the mood of a project. But I know my students dream and imagine vividly, and they want their artwork to shine!
