Exploring Calculators To Make Math Fun

My project needs the Math Explorer TI-12 calculator for the overhead projector in order to teach students how to convert fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers.

I am a third grade teacher at a Title I school where more than 60% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. We are a very diverse school and have students from all over the world who speak many different languages. This year I am teaching math to all the third grade students. I am VERY excited about this and have just received a set of used Math Explorer calculators from another school in our county. I was able to play with the Math Explorer TI-12 calculator at home for an evening and could not believe all the things that this calculator can do! I was so excited about being able to use this calculator with my students who all struggle in math. This will help them see how fractions, decimals and mixed numbers are related. This calculator even shows you the quotient AND remainder when doing a division problem! I was so excited when I got back to school the next day! I couldn't wait for the year to start so I could show my students how to use these wonderful new calculators! But then I realized..."how can I show my students how to use this wonderful calculator if I don't have one for my overhead?" My students need to SEE me using the calculator so they will understand what all the buttons mean and what all this calculator can do. However, this would not be possible without an overhead calculator. You can give students a calculator and a math problem, but without the correct tools and instruction, the calculator becomes the problem.
