Exploring and Communicating Math (for ELL, SpEd, and SIFE populations)
My students need tools for numeracy, exploration, and communication of mathematics. We need soft cubes, glue sticks and crayons.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 9th to 11th grade students are predominantly English Language Learners, Special Education, and Students with Interrupted Formal Education. In the past, I have had classrooms with 30+ students speaking 7 different primary languages, and academic and soft skills that are all over the map.
It's a vibrant and energetic environment, but with a great range of needs.
This creates difficulties for students communicating ideas that can enrich their math experience, and for the teacher reaching each student at their respective levels. With English issues listening, speaking, reading, and writing; and math problems starting with adding and subtracting in some cases, they need as many avenues to demonstrate success and growth as I can provide.
My Project
This project will address issues in multiple classrooms, including 9th and 11th grade students. In the 9th Grade, the focus is on numeracy and building math exploration and communication. In the 11th Grade, the focus is to explore Common Core Algebra content while developing their reasoning and communication.
In all classrooms, the beginning of the year is devoted to inspiring creative mathematical thinking and problem-solving.
They will involve challenges with a low floor (everyone can access the problem) and high ceiling (even the highest level students can find new problems to explore within the activity). Ideally, the activities are new to all and give students who otherwise feel disenfranchised by mathematics an opportunity to engage and feel excited with their contributions. Many of the resources your donation provides are directly applicable as students learn to communicate findings in poster presentations (markers and pens, glue-sticks) while making observations and analyzing games, puzzles, and explorations (including the Sets game).
As the year progresses, I will use the 24 Game and Fraction Tower especially to improve 9th grade numeracy and mathematical structure, while the 11th grade would use Color Cubes, for instance, to explore quadratic patterns. Opportunities will always present themselves for groups to demonstrate their learning in presentations.
