Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are resilient. They have suffered through many of the various challenges that life has to offer. Some have experienced the loss of a parent through death or incarceration. Some are incarcerated themselves. Others deal with poverty on a daily basis. They are not unaccustomed to trials, hardship, chaos, and threats to their lives.
My students learn most enthusiastically in a non-traditional classroom setting.
I teach in an alternative school that allows them this opportunity. The key to helping my students learn is to build strong relationships with them, learning about them and their circumstances. Then I bring in art projects that allow them to express the bevy of emotions they each hold within themselves. Projects that have captured their attention, and allowed them to explore art concepts, skills, and expressions have been paper mache, chalk pastels, acrylic painting, 3D modeling, crochet, polymer clay sculpting, and macrame'. Even though all my students are at different levels and learning abilities, these projects allow them to follow their own creativity and share their emotions and interests in a productive format.
My Project
The wonderful donors on DonorsChoose.org helped to get my students a 3D printer and we had been printing with PLA because that is what came with the printer. One of my students asked me if PLA was the only material that they could print in. So I had them research different 3D printing materials. They found a few different types and the pros and cons of each. With this in mind we narrowed down our list of materials to try to ASA and PETG. They also found out that there were better options for the bed surface that we could try.
My students are excited to try different 3D printing materials to see their strengths and weaknesses first hand.
After experimenting with the new materials they will print and possibly paint different objects as gifts for their family and friends. I will also be printing different objects to help teach about different cultures and how they celebrate the last few months of the year.
