This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Science is everywhere, yet my students' first hand experiences with science come only from a textbook. They are growing up in a high tech urban city but have never seen the basic science that led to all of it. All they see is the AstroTurf of their school playground and the cement in their yards.
I am a 6th grade Math and Science teacher working in an urban inner city school; 98% of my students come from low income families.
With 31 students in each classroom, it is a daily struggle to maintain student engagement and excitement for learning. The majority of my two classrooms are bilingual with a few non-English speaking learners. As a monolingual teacher, I must remain on my toes to ensure that my students are understanding the science concepts that we are learning. The dance is worth it when I see their eyes light up during experiments and hands-on activities. Learning does not occur by showing students some vocabulary words and concepts in a book that they cannot relate to; it occurs when they see the vocabulary and concepts in action.
My Project
The frog egg and preying mantis kits are two tools that will literally bring science to life in the classroom. The students will be able to share in the experience of watching these completely different, yet intriguing, organisms develop from tiny eggs to adults.
Science, Math, and Technology... this is the world our students live in today.
We must not limit our students' learning to textbook pictures; they need to be engaged by seeing, touching and most importantly, experiencing first hand, the awesome world of science at work around them. My students deserve the opportunity to see that life exists all around them and that it is further enhanced when we can step away from our textbooks.
