My classroom consists of a diverse population, from all over the world. Many of them are English Language Learners, come from low income families and are growing up in inner city neighborhoods. At school they are provided with free breakfast and lunch and many of them are given backpacks of food every Friday to ensure they are fed over the weekend.
Despite the obstacles they face daily outside of school, they continue to show up eager to learn.
I consider my students to be the most caring, generous, understanding and helpful children that I know. They deserve the best education regardless of where they come from. When they enter my classroom, they feel safe and know they have the opportunity to find their strengths through engaging, hands on learning.
My goal is to provide the necessary resources for an exciting and rich learning experience, especially for those who lack that opportunity in their home environment. If my students are fortunate enough to obtain these types of resources, this will help them develop the skills needed to be and feel successful. This will give them exposure to new types of learning.
My Project
Having these materials in the classroom will consistently support student academics through active, hands-on learning. For some of my students, the classroom is the only time they have to interact with children their own age and learn how to work cooperatively with one another.
Kinesthetic learning is more valuable to a student than any teaching I can do, therefore having these materials will allow them to problem solve and explore on their own.
These materials will enrich their minds in new and engaging ways. Using these types of math and literacy manipulatives, puzzles and games will give students opportunities to use inquiry thinking and create an atmosphere of sharing and responsibility. With a class of more than half of the students that are ELL, these activities are differentiated and will meet the needs of all learning styles. These include: Phonics Quiz Cards with pens, Wooden Pattern Blocks, Magnetic Math Manipulatives and more.
In order to keep the centers that I create handmade lasting longer, they need to be durable and the laminating machine will allow me to make them with durability and they can be used over and over again in the coming years. Dry erase markers can also be used on laminated activities making them more engaging and interactive and reusable.
