My students need quality, high interest books that will draw them to our classroom library again and again. Book series are especially nice because it keeps our students engaged in independent reading longer!
Kids have the biggest and most wonderful imaginations. They're fed by the world around them, what they see, hear, touch, taste and smell. However, there is a whole other world in which a second graders creative mind can draw pictures and make movies of their own! In a book of course! Reading for the sole purpose of enjoyment is becoming a lost art. I want my students to know that reading can be an amazing journey into unknown worlds and characters. They can travel all over the world and back again between the covers of a book. Most importantly, they can enjoy it! It all starts with the right book!
My Project
These books will build a classroom library that will engage young readers. My goal is to help my students learn to love reading by providing them with literature that fascinates, encourages and engages them in ways they didn't know were possible. I want them to see that reading can be a passtime because it is enjoyable. Once a student can enjoy reading, they can grow in literacy.
Reading promotes academic growth in all subjects as well as creativity and boosts imagination.
It always amazes me when students want to tell me about their books and suggest them to me and their peers. They learn descriptive and persuasive skills by summarizing a story to encourage others to read it. Even more, students LOVE their independent reading time when they are provided with texts that are important to their lives; fiction and nonfiction.
