My Students
As a Pre-K teacher in a low-income area, my students are inquisitive, curious, active explorers, and are vessels ready to learn. My students learn mostly through exploration and play. Language is developed when I listen to and speak with students during center time and during small groups. I also make sure to have individual conversations with each child throughout the day. My students are encouraged to talk about what they are doing during the day and to tell simple stories.
Many of my students are from single-parent households and they receive free breakfast and lunch as part of the Head Start Program.
Some of my children have disabilities ranging from hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, speech and language difficulties. I try to engage all students by getting to know and understand each student so that I can help them learn best.
My Project
My preschool students are very inquisitive and love to explore the world around them. I want to offer many things in my classroom centers that will allow them this ability to use their creativity to explore and build things and become familiar with STEAM. The creative possibilities would be endless for their little imaginations but I have to expose them to these things. I have a building center in my classroom but not a lot of items that my students can use to explore.
My students would be able to express themselves any way they wish and would have multiple opportunities to engage in hands-on investigations of STEAM concepts using everyday themes.
In addition to learning these STEAM concepts, students will develop their literacy, math, and social-emotional skills as they turn concepts into reality every day. The LEGO sets I have chosen are designed around playful narrative-based problem-solving with relatable themes that can develop my PreK students into independent STEAM thinkers.
