My Project
As the math data analysis teacher at our school, I am continuously evaluating areas of academic need from a Tier 1 instructional perspective. Over time, our data has consistently shown that students struggle the most with geometry concepts. Through deeper analysis, we have identified a key contributing factor: geometry is often taught at the end of the academic year, making it one of the first units to be shortened or cut altogether when teachers run out of instructional time. This deprioritization leads to gaps in foundational geometry knowledge, including spatial reasoning, attributes of shapes, angles, lines, symmetry, and more.
This project seeks to address that instructional gap by providing teachers with a collection of hands-on manipulatives that can be checked out and used in small-group instruction throughout the school year.
These materials will help students engage with geometry concepts in an interactive and meaningful way, rather than encountering them as an afterthought.This project will provide AngLeg manipulatives, which students can use to measure angles and construct, identify, and classify triangles and quadrilaterals. In addition, it will support the purchase of geometry building sets, allowing students to explore and build both two- and three-dimensional shapes strengthening conceptual understanding of this critical mathematical vocabulary. Other hands-on tools—such as Wikki Stix, updated pattern blocks, shape sorters, and Magna-Tiles—will be included to support engaging math centers where students can investigate concepts related to shape attributes, symmetry, and spatial relationships.
