I am a first grade teacher in a suburban community. Our school has a population of 520 students. The school is a Title 1 school with a low socio-economic and transient population. There were 62% of the children receiving free or reduced lunches during the 2004-2005 school year.
My goal for the children is to provide hands-on learning with activity filled centers that are ready to use. I want the children to engage in meaningful learning experiences that support the state standards. The children will be employing their reading, writing, listening, speaking, math, and science skills. After introducing each learning experience, the children will be free to explore and learn at their own pace. This gives the children an opportunity to make an academic choice, take responsibility for their learning by exploring, responding, recording, constructing, practicing, and applying the skills through appropriate processes and activities. Each hands-on learning activity provides independence, sustainability, and meaningfulness.
To meet the learning goals the following materials will be necessary: question of the day, langage arts learning centers, math centers, science centers, hand magnifiers, and student thermometers. These materials will be used for 24 students and future students in the classroom.
Children learn best when they are given choices about what they are learning and plenty of opportunities to explore, make decisions, take risks and share their efforts and learning with others. These experiences will give added meaning and depth to their learning.
