My Students
Our students live on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota which is one of the poorest counties in the United States of America. We are located in the center of the reservation, which is surrounded by other smaller communities. Majority of our students come from these different communities to be here at school on a daily basis, which means some travel for over two hours a day to be at school. Our school and community is the center of the reservation. My students are energetic, smart, and eager to learn new things on a daily basis. I would like to give them a broader choice in reading materials, because I believe books open a whole new experience and world. Living in a rural area, some of our students don't get to travel a lot and I feel that books open this opportunity for students to explore and learn about characters, experiences, and places that we don't see everyday!
My Project
Help our classroom create a classroom rich with a variety of awesome and amazing reading materials! My students love to read, explore and question the world on a daily basis! Please help broaden those experiences with new reading materials in our classroom library. My students spend 20 to 30 minutes a day doing independent reading, and at that time they are free to decide what they read ad share what they read to their peers. We also spend a good portion of our morning in reading groups, and the books will give them the opportunity have more selections to read in groups, independently or when they read to other students.
