At Speight Middle School we strive for excellence and one way we reach excellence is by incorporating hands on learning as much as possible. The science classroom is an area that can, and should, be filled with many types of hands-on activities that help students learn. Unfortunately we do not have all the materials needed to meet all of our needs. One of those needs is for a classroom set of microscopes.
Microscopes are a great way for students to be actively involved in learning. They allow students to see that there is "more than meets the eye" in the world around us. This proposal would meet the needs of approximately 450 students, as these microscopes can be used by all grade levels in my school. Sixth graders can explore what really is living in the soil. Seventh graders can get up close and personal and flex their knowledge with slides of muscles. And finally eighth graders can get on a cellular level with animal and plant cells. By the time many students reach high school they have had little use of microscopes, this puts them behind because then the high school teachers must take additional time to teach them the basics. This proposal, if filled, will not only benefit students at the middle school level but well into their high school and college years as well. I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider funding all or part of this proposal!
