Exploratory Play Toys for Young Learners!

My Project

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist working with 12 kindergarten students who are developmentally delayed. Due to these delays, some of these students are still in the Exploratory Phase of play where they like to dump, throw, shake or even mouth toys. Exploratory play describes the early stages of play where student are using their senses to explore toys and objects. Autistic children often spend more time in the exploratory phase of play than typically developing children.

My children in the Exploratory Phase of play will use these "put-in" toys to help guide them toward one-step functional play.

For example, banging a drum, pushing a car or cause/effect toys would be appropriate one-step functional play. Put-in and take-out activities can help guide the dumping and throwing to more functional play.

Although I have made a lot of my own put-in toys, I would love to increase my repertoire of this style of toys to encourage these students to move toward functional play. The activities I have included are engaging and target vocabulary and linguistic concepts as well as functional play.
