My Students

At my Title I school of nine hundred kids, both teachers and students are struggling to adapt to the "new normal" or to even figure out what that new normal may be. With a student body that collectively speaks over thirty different languages and with many families relying on free lunches for their children, we have a lot of challenges this school year.

My colleagues and I are working to identify the most effective strategies to keep our diverse learners engaged and moving forward academically, no matter what the future holds.

In the face of all the unknowns, there are some things I can count on from all my students: They are enthusiastic about STEM. They are curious and observant and like learning how and why things work the way they do. While they are easily distracted, they can throw themselves into a task with wholehearted focus if it is a project that seems worthwhile. The most important aspect of my job as a STEM teacher is to design lessons that are engaging enough to channel that adolescent enthusiasm and exuberance so that they can develop their abilities in the essential science and engineering practices.

My Project

My STEM classes are focused on climate change and resilience in Brooklyn and the inequitable impact of extreme heat on less affluent neighborhoods like ours. Students began an examination of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and will discover how surface temperature varies within and between city blocks as a result of UHI at a hyperlocal scale.

In order for students to collect data on surface temperatures while we are learning remotely, I need a class set of infrared thermometers so that each student has one to use at home.

Investigation design and data collection are essential skills in science and something we typically practice in the classroom. It is much more difficult to teach these skills remotely, when I am unable to monitor student progress and, more importantly, unable to supply them with the resources they need to carry out their investigations. With a full set of heat-sensitive thermometers, students will have the tools they need to collect data at home, and the infrared camera attachment for my phone will allow me to easily share images of locations near school so that we can compare and contrast results from different places.
