This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you every where!" -Albert Einstein In first grade, our learning may look like play, but we mean serious business! I would like to create more opportunities for students to investigate math, science, and engineering through creative exploration.

My students have little bodies and BIG hearts.

Our school is in the heart of Richmond, California in a high crime, low income neighborhood. Our students face adversities before they even step a foot into the classroom but still come to school ready to tackle a new set of academic challenges. I believe that every student deserves access to the resources they need to be successful in life.

My Project

I want to create exploration stations for my students to use when we have Fun Friday. The resources I asked for will help expose students to math, science, and engineering concepts while encouraging critical thinking skills through creative play. My students need building materials like blocks, logs, and chutes, strategic games, create/design kits, and manipulatives. Students will explore their understanding of physics and engineering by constructing towers and ramps for marbles to run down in the marble run. They will need to use their critical thinking skills to assemble the pieces in a way that allows the marble to reach the end of the course. Students will design environments that encourage problem solving skills using LEGO and other materials. People learn from practice. Students that create small scale models are exposed to the same physical properties that engineers and scientists do on a larger scale. Strategic games will expose students to calculated concepts while helping support spatial reasoning, motor skills, divergent thinking, and language development.

"Girls don't play with legos, they're for boys!" I was told this by my three year old niece, and it made me sad!

I want to create a culture in my classroom where ALL students have an equal opportunity to explore tech subjects. Girls and minorities ARE interested in math, science, and engineering. I need resources for them to explore, create, and build. I hope to increase the participation of women and minorities in technical careers by creating a passion for math, science, and engineering now.
