My students are facing multiple barriers that are interrupting their journey in high school; even potentially preventing them from graduating. This newly implemented program is allowing these at risk students an opportunity to learn life skills, community resource availability, and career exploration to prevent their lifestyle circumstances from affecting their focus of graduating and achieving a career after high school.
My students deal with challenges and hardships well beyond their years, and yet they try their best to keep their attendance in check as they know this is step one of succeeding in high school.
Many of my students do not have support at home, a trusting ear to listen to them, an encouraging voice to cheer for them, or even support to become the first-generation college student. As their teacher, I am striving to provide resources and support to teach them to overcome these barriers while coddling them as their "school mom"; a safe support person who will not judge their choices but merely guide them through their day and beyond.
Each student is beginning to explore step two, responsibility and success. Their determination so far is contagious as they are becoming a well groomed sponge of knowledge!
My Project
Students will build a resource foundation of explored careers that are available after graduation which can assist in making thoughtful decisions for their future success while gaining confidence. In order to explore this path, access to a classroom tool to research on the web would allow endless discoveries and exploration of careers.
What makes this program so special is that it doesn't tell students what to be, but it empowers students to explore possibilities and make thoughtful decisions of what they can be.
Our need of Tablets will assist in achieving a great understanding of job search, volunteering opportunities in the community, planning for college, and much more. All of these possibilities will assist in growing their mindset.
Over the next trimester, I anticipate positive responses from my students after they have researched careers. They will realize that this program is too valuable to not have back next year as they approach their senior year with confidence of a successful exploration to sustain their future after graduation. The end result of employability, post-secondary education, or military is on their horizon!
