This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students live in a low-income area in St. Louis, Missouri. The students I work with come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students deal with stress and trauma-related experiences that no child should have to deal with at this age.
My students are fun-loving and are eager to learn!
Regardless of what they are going through they just want to be at school! This will be my second year teaching and I can truly say I want to buy everything for my classroom that can help my students learn and grow. It was a total shock looking in all of the teachers' rooms and knowing they bought everything in there! As teachers, we just want what is best for our students and as a new teacher that is all I want!
My Project
In my classroom, we usually do paper morning work. This year I would like to change that for my students. Right away in the morning, my students eat breakfast then are asked to trace ABC letters on a piece of paper. This year I want my students to have the chance to grab an exploration tub, take it to their table and work with a peer.
They will have the opportunity to manipulate tools to build or create for about 15 minutes every morning.
I believe more fun and engaging acvitivies right in the morning will get my students excited about the day. Tinker toys and Interlox Squares help the students build and put toys together with their peers. They can build a house with their friends and learn new shapes at the same time.
Many of these will help with fine motor skills that five and six-year-old need, especially in August, for example beads, stencils, and markers. Connect Four will help with math as well, they will be counting and trying to get to the number four and keeping track of their colors.
This will be a new and fun way to get my kindergarteners involved in the morning and I am excited to try it!
