Most of the greatest inventions have been driven by curiosity. Curiosity alone, however, could not have created the light bulb, the printing press, or computers. The inventors of these world-changing inventions also had opportunity.
The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students in the bilingual program at my school are filled with curiosity, but lack opportunities.
They are encouraged to "make it;" rarely are they encouraged to think outside the box and pursue "wild" dreams.
My students have the utmost potential. I want to encourage them in their youthful curiosity and, with your help, provide them with opportunities to learn about and change their community and their world.
Experiential learning is a phrase that, too often, is misused in education. Instead of meaning a hands-on opportunity where students learn through real-life application, it is abused to describe any trip outside of the school building.
On our trip to the Museum of Science and Industry, my students will truly get to experience the world around them like never before.
They will get hands-on opportunities to understand otherwise abstract science concepts such as sustainable energy and genetics. Since our school lacks science equipment, most of the activities students do at school involve simulations and projected images. Through this experiential learning trip, my students will have the opportunity to explore and understand a variety of science concepts and to grow in their curiosity about the world around them.
