Help me give my students an experience they can remember! By growing herbs and sunflowers throughout the unit, students will watch the stages of plant growth first-hand. They will also have fresh herbs to try with school lunches!
The Pre-K team at H. Elementary in OK is planning to start a unit on Plants after winter break. We would love to make this experiential for students, allowing them to be involved in growing their own plants and watching the process first hand.
We know that our students learn most when they have hands on experience, and we are eager to create more opportunities for them to explore and investigate.
Our students are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. Help us give them a learning experience they won't forget!
My Project
Our students learn best and retain knowledge when they get hands-on experience. Planting seeds and watching them grow helps children learn about the growth process, the environment and the foods they eat. Gardening also engages children to use all their senses.
We want our youngest scholars to be deeply engaged in the world of science, and gardening is a wonderful introduction to it.
As students plant their seeds, their natural curiosities will kick in and they will begin to hypothesize what will happen next. They will be engaging in this process alongside the CKLA curriculum, which emphasizes stages of plant growth and what plants need to survive.
Growing herbs and sunflowers will also teach our students about responsibility. A classroom helper will be assigned the role of “gardener” and instructed to care for the seeds on their assigned day. We need soil, pots, seeds, and herb kits to make this experience possible for our students.
