Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach sixth grade in one of the poorest performing schools in New York City. This status greatly influences the funding we receive. My students understand their situation and their response to academic achievement often follows. The world tells them that they are not worthwhile and they begin to believe it. Last year my sixth grade students went on one field trip to the Natural History Museum. There was no money for any other field trips and this particular museum was free. For most students the trip was their first time on the subway and their first time in Manhattan. Surprisingly, given this opportunity my student's performance and conduct was sterling. New York City has so much to offer educators and their students. The experiential knowledge children gain from adventuring out of the classroom and into New York City can change lives. It will change lives. I propose that my student be given the opportunity to expand their knowledge base through a series of museum and field visits throughout New York City. My target is to take at least one field trip a month. Ten trips in all. I have researched the opportunities that coincide with our sixth grade curriculum and have planned accordingly. Thirty students will visit 1. Brooklyn Botanical Garden, 2. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (free admission), 3. Museum of Chinese in the Americas, 4. The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, 5. Museum of Television & Radio, 6. American Museum of Natural History (free admission), 7. United Nations Building, 8. New York Hall of Science, 9. Museum for African Art, 10. Whitney Museum of American Art. The impact of these field visits for my students will be lasting. The classroom activities planned around these field visits stress the importance of students making connections to the world, their community, and their academic studies. Above all these opportunities will allow students to see worlds beyond their small housing project in Brooklyn.
