My Students
Our motto in my classroom comes from Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri, "That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet" (The Namesake).
Our class explores the world through the books we read!
My students are amazing kids.
I teach high school in a rural community in the Midwest. We live in a small country community. Many of my students live on small family farms or they have horses and other livestock. Many of these kids will start their own families and purchase their own homes in this same community; that's a good thing, it's a great place to live.
In my World Literature class, I try to expose them to different cultures and countries. I want them to be exposed to different ideas and people that view the world differently. There is so much to gain from reading a book about a different place. We do that in my class.
My Project
With the donation of The Book Thief, we will be able to read the novel together as a class. This book teaches so many valuable lessons. Most importantly, I want my students to see Germany and the German people during WWII in a different way. I want them to realize how many good people lived in Germany and also suffered like the rest of the world during WWII. This novel will help us realize that we can't place labels on people. Not all Germans were Nazi's or followed Hitler. Many were good people that found themselves thrown into a terrible situation.
My students will learn valuable lessons about humanity from reading this book.
My students need to experience the lives of other people outside of our community.
They need to know what it is like to live in a different country and have different traditions and customs. Books like The Book Thief open their minds to different ideas. They will be better people after reading this book!
