Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

How do you explain the ocean and marine life to students with significant developmentally delays, very limited language, as well as cognitive and perceptive problems? They must experience it first hand. Three years ago, we were able to take our Classes to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and that experience stayed with the students and became part of their long-term memory. We have been granted free entrance for a self-guided tour from the Aquarium, but we need to pay for the bus to take our two classes. One class has 8 profoundly autistic students and the other has 12 students with significant developmental delays like Downs Syndrome. There will be 10 staff members chaperoning, including 2 teachers, a speech therapist, a psychologist and 6 special education teacher aides. The visit will be video taped and discussed with students for the next three years while discussion animals and their habitats. The students pay more attention to video in which they are a part and relive the experience. This allows the four hour experience to become a part of their life long memory and cognitive awareness of the world around them.
