My students need 6 copies (including one for the teacher) of 6 autobiographical books written by people who experienced the Holocaust. This will prepare us for our trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and an in-class presentation by a Holocaust survivor.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help me bring the victims of the Holocaust back to life! I teach eighth grade students in a low income, multicultural urban neighborhood. There is a lot of intolerance amongst my students. I want them to learn about the Holocaust - the ultimate lesson about the dangers of intolerance. Rather than reading about it in some textbook, I want my students to learn about it from primary sources, from the people who were actually there. The Diary of Anne Franke is an example of the books that I would use. The class will divide up into groups, and each group will read one of the books and present the book to the rest of the class.

The obstacle that my students face is simple: we don't have these books, and we will not receive public funding for them. The students must come to appreciate the terrible cost of intolerance. The tragedy of the Holocaust must become real to them.

The students need to realize that the Holocaust isn't just numbers in a book. I am requesting sets of books that provide first-hand accounts of the Holocaust through the eyes of other teenagers to help my students appreciate fully the cost that bigotry imposes upon humanity and to understand that it is too real. They will read the actual stories of people who have lost family members and who have truly suffered. Again, the Diary of Anne Franke is one example of these books. Confronting this issue of intolerance is key to their coexisting with other people in the future. The books will bring the Holocaust to life in a way that no textbook can.
