My Project
My students are of elementary age and on the spectrum. They enjoy making different items that have different textures or anything that gives them sensory input. My students don't have the words to express what they want to do or what they did in school. Working on something they truly enjoy (sensory arts and crafts projects) will help them acquire the language they need to request items needed, to follow directions, to sequence what they did, to give them the sensory input they like and perhaps that can trigger the ability to go home and tell mom or dad about what they did in school during speech and language.
Lastly, there is a lot of vocabulary during arts and crafts sensory projects as well as enthusiasm from my students.
I believe that learning should always be enjoyable, even more for our special needs students because they will be captivated and be able to take in what I am trying to teach them. All of the items above will help me give my students unforgettable and enjoyable lessons during speech and language that will help them with their expressive and receptive language skills.
