My Students

My students come into 6th grade either loving to read or hating to read. Many of them do not have books at home to read. Imagine their world when introduced to a great book that draws them into a new world! They need to have books they want to become part of; the excitement, the conflicts, and finally the solution - whether or not it is one their like.

My students love freedom of choice in what they read, but they also enjoy collaborating with their peers in a whole class read aloud.

"I learn so much from my table groups opinions" is a response often given as to what works in the classroom. Great books are one of the most important staples needed in every classroom.

My Project

For the past five years, my sixth graders have been immersing themselves in the life of ancient Romans by reading the book Tiger, Tiger. There is no better way to understand the power of Caesar and the social structure than to read a story that not only engages the students, but lets them become deeply involved in the lives of the characters.

Unfortunately, my class set is falling apart.

Five years of 100 students means that each book has been read 500 times - pages are falling out, spines are broken. Kids are sad! Help get a new class set!
