Experiencing Human Journeys in Literature

Help me give my students books in which they would see the reflection of their journeys such as Nowhere Boy by Katherine Marsh and The Red Pencil by Andrea Davis Pinkney directly connect to my students' experiences.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Goldenberg's classroom raised $199

My Students

My students represent a diverse community of learners. Their age ranges from four to fourteen years and their language proficiency varies from entering to bridging. The students come from across the globe from the Himalayas to the Andes. On any given day, I hear students speaking Chinese, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, Nepali, Russian, and Bengali, Portuguese, and Urdu. These students are united by the same goal of learning English and reaching proficiency in academic and interpersonal communication. I am committed to providing them with challenging assignments that would be both linguistically accessible and content rich.

My Project

The materials requested in this project would benefit my students greatly because they would provide supplementary reading resources that reflect my students' journeys. We would read the books as a part of a literature study, as well as the study of global events that led to the events described in the books.

Students would see the examples of literature that allows them to see themselves represented in stories, as well as realize that literature has the power to shed light on real events.

I am developing students' appreciation for reading by offering them reading experiences and discussions that deepen their understanding of literary elements, language, and themes in literature. Your support of this project will bring quality reading materials to my students.
