Experiencing American History Through American Experience

Help me give my students the opportunity to explore the history of the United States through the use of the excellent documentaries of PBS!

My Project

Teaching about American history can often be difficult to engage the interest of middle school students. Relying on simply textbooks and worksheets is often not a well received approach to learning for many students. Rather, students often become more interested in a topic and learn better when presented with visual representations of the various subjects they are learning about. Documentary films can play a huge role in grabbing student interest and creating a better learning environment when teaching about various subjects in American history.

The documentary films produced by PBS, including the works of Ken Burns and the seminal series American Experience, are outstanding resource to use in the classroom.

Students love the films and are very engaged in learning about the various topics of American history presented through the programs. However, as many of the films are older and not readily available to stream without a paid subscription, it will be a wonderful resource to assemble a library of these films on DVD. This will ensure that students can learn from these films in the classroom and gain a deeper understanding of countless subjects related to American history.
