Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is so much more to history than the listed facts that appear in text books. The purpose of this proposal is to help my students "experience" important landmarks and events in U.S. history, rather than simply reading about their existence in their social studies books.
I currently teach fifth grade general education at a culturally diverse school located on the north shore of Staten Island, NY. Most of my students are English Language Learners from low-income households, and many have never traveled off of Staten Island.
I love to teach social studies, especially U.S. History, however, many of my students are less than enthusiastic when having to read about American history and geography from text books to supplement our classroom lessons. Aside from the language issue, most text books simply list fact after fact about historical events. Students rarely get to read about the hardships, obstacles, personal sacrifices and difficult decisions that people had to make throughout history. These details and stories, which are often omitted from text books, are what makes history come alive.
I believe that several board games and some educational software would enhance my classroom social studies lessons by requiring students to "experience" historical situations. I want to put my students in the shoes of Lewis and Clark, and have them consider some of the issues and decisions they had to make during their westward explorations. I want my students to "virtually experience" the obstacles and hardships that settlers had to make on the Oregon Trail by using the Oregon Trail software. I want my students to learn about colonial life by playing the "Made for Trade" board game.
By providing my students with visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic experiences with U.S. history, you can help my students experience important details of U.S. History, which so often are omitted from text books.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
