This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are expanding our Unified Sports program to include two additional schools within our district, creating more inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities. This expansion will allow these students to participate in Basketball, Bocce, and Track & Field alongside their peers in an environment that promotes teamwork, friendship, and physical activity. By increasing access to these sports, we aim to foster greater inclusion, build school community, and support the physical and social development of all participating students.

Access to proper equipment—like basketballs, bocce balls, and track gear—creates hands-on learning experiences that promote motor skill development, teamwork, and inclusion.

These tools allow students to fully engage in adaptive sports in meaningful ways, providing equal opportunities to practice, compete, and grow. The equipment also helps reinforce concepts such as spatial awareness, coordination, and goal-setting, while encouraging social interaction and boosting self-esteem.

Our goals are to expand Unified Sports offerings to two more schools in our district, increase participation among students with disabilities, and foster an inclusive school culture where all students—regardless of ability—can compete, collaborate, and succeed together. We aim to strengthen physical education programming, support health and wellness, and build stronger peer relationships through shared sports experiences.

Our students are resilient, vibrant, and diverse. Many come from underserved, inner-city communities and bring a wide range of cultural backgrounds and lived experiences. They are eager for opportunities to shine, connect with peers, and feel seen and valued. Unified Sports gives them a powerful platform to break down barriers, celebrate ability over disability, and demonstrate the power of inclusion and teamwork. Their determination and sense of community make every step forward in this program truly inspiring.
