My students need items like the canopy to create a healthy, more comfortable classroom outside, dry erasers, TIME FOR KIDS magazines, books, flashcards and posters.
KES is a Title One school with one thousand plus students attending. Many of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged. Our fourth grade class has close to two hundred students split up between eight classes. Two of those classes are inclusion classes, with one special education teacher (myself), that goes back and forth between the two classes. I have two assistants that help with the group lessons. The other classes have a high population of English Language Learners that works with us in small group to help them understand the lesson at a modified pace.
Elder Nelson said " Education is the difference between wishing you could help other people and being able to help them".
In order to meet the diverse needs of not only my students with special needs, but also to meet the needs of all the students struggling in fourth grade, we set up a classroom outside of the classroom. The students that are identified and require specially designed instruction, ranges from understanding kindergarten level to upper elementary. Using resources such as books at lower levels and the math manipulatives, allows for more hands-on learning for our lower students and students that do not speak English.
My Project
At the fourth grade level, students are expected to read more! Although independent reading is highly encourage at home, in the classroom, readers are randomly picked! Math word problems become multi-step word problems, going back to reading again. Many times this can "build or break" a child's self-esteem. Creating a "classroom outside the classroom" allows for all students to learn without feeling the pressure of others, mainly, for our kids to read with confidence and enjoyment.
George Evans quoted "Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way".
Expanding the classroom to outside the four walls in which they have been taught for the last six years of their lives if they were lucky enough to be in school. The canopy and the sun shades help student to continue their time outside the classroom without getting too hot. The books and the posters give them the power to find information on their own without asking an adult for help, building independence and life long learners.
