This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
From their socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities, and reading and writing levels, to their interests and aspirations, my students make up an incredibly diverse community. One shared factor in many students’ lives, however, is their attitude towards reading.
I have found that my students are most engaged when given contemporary texts that emphasize topics pertinent to their own lives.
Unfortunately, despite repeated student requests, we are unable to read more contemporary texts due to the limited book selection at our high school.
My Project
If funded, this project will provide students the opportunity to read a novel I am confident they will love.
All American Boys is a contemporary novel that not only addresses issues of race and police brutality but also highlights the need for conversation and empathy in society.
The fact that the novel is written from the perspectives of two very different characters provides readers with an opportunity to understand a point of view they may never have considered before. Students will be challenged to identify the author's message about society and how it applies to them directly.
By donating to this project, your generosity will provide students with a novel that addresses current societal issues and may also help foster or reawaken in them a love of reading.
