My Project

For the last few years I have conducted a Mario Kart lesson in my honors and Advanced Placement Psychology classes. This is a pretty large, hands-on activity that spans two days of time to play a day and then debrief the activity during our unit on learning (classical conditioning, operant conditioning, etc.) through the use of Mario Kart...and now want to explore using The Oregon Trail. I have also researched the benefits of gamification and would like to expand on this project for each unit that I teach in psychology to explore vocabulary and overall concepts as I explore these ideas of experiential learning. This can be done in smaller groups allowing for more play and collaboration time with the addition of more consoles for students to have access to.

The TV screen, when not being used for video gaming can also be used to break students up into learning centers, or study stations, to create more interactive learning during our labs set up across the year, such as creating brain models, or having digital instructions displayed for whole groups in our sensations and perceptions lab work, and to work through different chunks of information within these stations to fit their specific needs for review of the content as we get ready for the midterms and AP exams in May.

In meeting students in a world where there are many things that can distract them through the use of technology, they will have the tools that show them how to engage in their learning.
