This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For this project, I want to inspire and encourage academic discourse among my Advanced Placement (AP) history students and help build their capacity. Academic discourse can contribute to social-emotional learning by fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. When students engage in academic discourse, they have the opportunity to practice empathy, active listening, and respectful communication. These skills are essential components of social-emotional learning.

Through academic discourse, students learn to consider and respect diverse perspectives, which promotes empathy and understanding.

They develop the ability to listen attentively to their peers, validating their thoughts and feelings. This active listening promotes a sense of belonging and encourages students to feel heard and valued.

Furthermore, academic discourse encourages students to express their thoughts and opinions respectfully. By engaging in constructive dialogue, students learn to communicate effectively, manage conflicts, and navigate differing viewpoints. This process helps them develop self-awareness, self-regulation, and social awareness, which are key aspects of social-emotional learning.

Moreover, academic discourse provides opportunities for collaboration and cooperation. Students work together to analyze information, solve problems, and build on each other's ideas. This collaborative environment fosters positive relationships, teamwork, and a sense of community, all of which contribute to social-emotional growth.

My students all come from different schools and different cultural/linguistic backgrounds. Sometimes it can be difficult for them to break out of their shell and engage in academic discourse with their peers. The microphone ball with be used to facilitate whole group discussion in the form of philosophical chairs, structured academic controversy, fish bowls, and Socratic seminars. The Tapple games will be used during group review so that students can build and play their own review games with their peers. Both of these items will provide an engaging pathway toward academic discourse and AP exam preparation.
